When painting this month’s Paint With Me Challenge painting, I wasn’t sure if I left out *too* much detail when painting the cantaloupes. I asked a few friends and it seems like the melons are still recognizable! It was a good reminder of how little information we need in order to understand what something is.

Reflections in watercolor can be painted in may ways.  There is no ‘right’ way, if you ask me - just your own stylistic preference.  I prefer painting abstract over realistic. I love allowing the beauty of watercolors to really show through in this area of the painting by using wet-on-wet techniques.

It is because of the chaos that I believe we need forms of solace (like creating) more than ever. Watching the news beyond getting the facts brings me down. There’s so much that is out of my control. But when I sit down to paint, I can spend more time in a space of joy and wonder rather than fear and anxiety. This was my first attempt at the painting for March’s Paint With Me Challenge. I knew it was going to be hard because people who had already painted and submitted their work told me so! Yikes! They were right - what was I thinking when I picked this photo? Honestly, I have no idea.

According to my mom, I’m not the best at painting flowers. And she’s not wrong. I have yet to find my stride when it comes to painting botanicals. But I know if I really wanted to find it, I could. But it will take some practice - which is what I’m sharing in this post.
