Meeden Watercolor Supplies for Beginners | Review

In this post, I’m sharing a review of a few budget-friendly watercolor supplies that are great for beginners by a brand called Meeden. I already own a few Meeden products and consider them on of the more affordable brands, so I hope this post and related video are helpful if you are looking to get started with watercolor painting without investing too much on supplies or if you’re just looking for supplies that are more budget-friendly.

In full transparency, all the Meeden supplies were sent to me by Meeden and if you use the links in this post to purchase, I’ll receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

As I mentioned, I have previously bought and used a few Meeden products, my favorites being a travel palette and more recently, a ceramic palette - which you’ll see mentioned here because (spoiler), I really like it!

Besides the ceramic palette, I tested out a set of watercolor paint in tubes, a set of watercolor brushes, and a block of watercolor paper. If you’re here for a quick summary of what I thought about the supplies, here it is below - quick and to the point!

18-Well Porcelain Artist Palette

This is hands down a YES. I had previously purchased this on Amazon and had already been using this for over a year at the time of writing this review. I love it!

  • Great (small) size

  • Wipes clean

  • Weighted and sturdy

  • Double sided (18 wells + 1 mixing area on one side + 12 mixing well on other side)

24 Color Watercolor Paint Set

If you are the type that wants all the colors up front to play with, then this is a good set. If you’re OK with picking and choosing select colors or perhaps want to start with a limited palette, then I’d go for something else. If you know you want to select your own colors, I would recommend investing in higher quality paints but getting less colors to start.

  • Great price for so many colors

  • Vibrant colors (especially when used straight out of the tube)

  • Some trouble with rehydrating from dried paint - not as vibrant or saturated

Set of 10 Watercolor Brushes

If your budget is tight, you could just get one brush to start. You don’t need this many. A good size 6 or 8 round will get you painting just fine. But if you want to play with a few different sizes and brush shapes to start, and don’t mind a brush that may not last as long over time (since I am unsure how the metal and wood will hold up with these) then grab this set.

  • Lots of brushes (maybe too many)

  • Bristles on round brushes hold a sharp point

  • Good “snap”, not floppy or moppy

  • Handle is lightweight, not sure how long it will hold up over time

7x10 Watercolor Block

I was surprised at how good this paper was. Especially for the price. This is a GREAT beginner paper to get (it’s even great for non-beginners!). Paper is the priciest supply, and one that most people skimp on. But it’s actually the supply you should splurge on.

The best paper is 100% cotton and at least 140lb if you’re planning to paint wet. And this block fills both of those requirements. If you’re a beginner I would highly recommend getting a block like this versus a student grade not 100% cotton pad/block.

  • Great quality 100% cotton paper

  • Great price for a 100% cotton block

  • Glued edges are strong and hold paper down so it doesn’t buckle

  • Handles water and wet-on-wet painting well

Overall, I feel like my experience so far of Meeden is that they are budget friendly, but still good quality. You honestly can’t go wrong with starting out with these supplies - especially for beginners. I wish I had bought these or something like it as the first set of supplies when starting out! I spent a lot of money getting too many random brushes and tubes of studen grade paints when I started. I also spent a lot on good 100% cotton paper (when it would have been more economical to practice on good budget-friendly 100% cotton paper.
