Why I Wanted to Start A Podcast
At the beginning of 2017, I had left my corporate job and my routine consisted of doctors appointments, daily acupuncture sessions, and being told to sit around/rest/not to stress. I mean, I really couldn’t walk much anyways from January to March because my legs were so swollen from edema. Being up on my feet just made it worse and reminded me how my body was literally attacking itself (as is the case in all autoimmune diseases).
I was left feeling sorry for myself because my “go-go-go” lifestyle came to a screeching halt. It wasn’t that I wanted that lifestyle. I was happy to be away from the stress and constant pressure of the job I had left.
I was just disappointed that I was paying the price for the years of built-up stress AFTER I left. I wasn’t able to embrace and enjoy my new-found freedom.
It was during this time that I started to watercolor. Soon after, I began working on building my business online. It gave me a sense of purpose and hope that the kind of lifestyle I wanted and needed was possible.
When you’re starting your own online business, it can be lonely. I consider myself very lucky to have connected with a few people early in my journey that I am still friends with to this day. One of them is Jisun Park (Everleaf Designs).
When we connected and started chatting about our businesses we became fast friends. Back in 2017 we already knew we wanted to host a podcast together.
And now we’ve finally done it!
It took years of spending time working separately on our businesses, growing our families, and doing lots of self-development for it to feel like the right time to create a podcast together.
We both have our reasons for wanting to start a podcast, but I wanted to share a few of mine with you in this post.
A Podcast Is More than Posts and Pictures
I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to connect with so many people online through social media. However, while a picture may be “worth a thousand words” those words are either assumed by whoever is looking at the photo, or read through a caption that I’ve probably edited and revised at least a few times.
Sure, text is written by me, in my own voice. But everything that I type out is more refined than raw. It’s been read, edited, edited some more, and finalized.
Talking can convey emotions and personality that doesn’t come through otherwise. It’s less edited. It shows that I’m flawed, human, and can’t always find the right words to describe what I’m trying to say.
And I think that’s a refreshing contrast to my posts and pictures.
A Podcast Is More Than My Watercolor Paintings
You know by now that you can expect me to share about watercolors or creativity. You can find it on my Instagram, here on the blog, and even in the form of online education.
But I have so much more I’d love to share outside of watercolors. Things like:
What’s going on in my day-to-day life
Struggles I’ve had in business
Lessons in mindset that could help others
I know Jisun feels similarly and for both of us, a podcast is a great way to share and connect with others over subjects we otherwise wouldn’t be posting about on social media.
A Podcast Is More Than Just Me
Ever since I started my Instagram account and sharing my work, my favorite part about it was (and still is) connecting with people and helping them. Whether or not it’s giving them ideas or inspiration for their own watercolor practice, or actively helping them figure out how to start.
I truly have some of the best students, email subscribers, and followers. And for that I’m so grateful.
I see the podcast as another channel for connecting and helping more people. And because the topics we’re covering on the podcast are broader than just watercolors and art, I believe we’ll be able to impact listeners in other areas of life. It’s my hope that if even just one person feels understood, less alone, and more inspired because of something we share, this podcast has served its purpose.
what’s our podcast called and what’s it about?
Our podcast is called Pockets of Time. In the episodes, we share unfiltered conversations about motherhood, entrepreneurship, creativity, lifestyle, health and wellness, and so much more.
