My #1 Tip For Easily Creating A Watercolor Mixing Chart

Today’s blog post is a short and sweet one! Today, I'm sharing my #1 tip for painting watercolor color mixing charts.

If you don’t know what a watercolor mixing chart is, definitely check out this step-by-step blog post on how to make one. And if you’ve already made your own mixing chart and are looking for my #1 tip to create them more easily, then you are in the right place!

After sharing how I made my watercolor mixing charts, I discovered a very helpful process that other artists were using that made painting charts much more fun and simple.

It took me way too long to test it out, but I finally got around to trying it. Now I can report back!

The verdict? I wish I discovered this process sooner! It’s now my #1 tip for creating watercolor mixing charts.

So, what’s the tip?

Use ¼” thick painters tape to create and mask off the grid.

In my experience, the most tedious part of painting a mixing chart is being careful about painting inside each of the squares.

By using masking tape:

  • You can save lots of time

  • You can paint freely and not worry about “staying in the lines” to create nice perfect squares

  • The squares will look crisp and clean and so will your chart

  • You can focus on color mixing and not tedious painting

In the video below, I talk through the use of masking tape and share what it looks like to create a color mixing chart with it!

I’m definitely going to be using this method for all of my color mixing charts from now on!
